A recent online survey conducted by JobsInVT.com asked job seekers using the site What are the top 6 reasons why you plan to change jobs (in the next 12 months)?

Good news for job seekers as the US job market showed signs of recovery when layoffs slowed by nearly a quarter last month. Challenger, Grey and Christmas, Inc. (CG&H, Inc.) reported an upturn in the countrys employment woes. Their report indicated that the gap between 2010 and 2011s year-to-date job cut percentages has continued to close dramatically during the past months. Last month alone showed another sharp 11% reduction. This brings renewed hope to job seekers whove been met with constant news of job cuts and layoffs soaring out of control in almost every industry.

John A. Challenger, Chief Executive Officer of CG&H, Inc. believes that these newest projections indicate that the spike that occurred in July could merely have been an anomaly. He stated that momentary rise in the higher percentage of layoffs was likely caused by company and industry specific trends, and probably not an indication of the overall direction of the economy.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics furthered employment enthusiasm in a recent announcement that in spite of the countrys overall job cuts, the Healthcare sector has provided a singular oasis in the seemingly endless desert of unemployment news worldwide. The Healthcare Industry added nearly 30,000 jobs in August alone, bringing the total of jobs created overall to over 200,000 so far this year. Upon detailed examination of the Bureaus preliminary findings, 25,000 of these jobs were in hospitals and ambulatory services. Even within the private sector, Doctors offices reported that 5,600 new hire positions were added in August; bringing the total to 30,600 so far this year. These numbers have risen dramatically over this time last year. At that time hospitals were reporting that only 15,800 new positions had been added throughout the entire first eight months (healthleadersmedia.com, 9/2/11). This year, after only eight months, hospital positions alone accounted for almost 60,000 new payroll additions. This is great news for the countrys Healthcare workers, as millions across the country watch the nations unemployment rate continue to stall out at just over 9%. However, the numbers in healthcare have given the countrys leaders good reason to stand up and take notice of a field that may be the saving grace of a country in dire need of opportunities.

This sends a clear message the message to nurses and patients that the White House is serious, not only about providing quality education to its workers, but raising the bar on substandard working environments. Administrator Mary K. Wakefield, Ph.D., R.N. at the Health Resources and Services Administration said in response to the grant announcement, A well-educated, highly-skilled, and diverse nurse workforce is critical to meeting future healthcare needs. These awards expand our efforts to grow a high-quality health workforce.

In August, at the White House Rural Economic Forum, President Obama made the announcement in the form of a new jobs initiative which was recommended by the White House Rural Council. The recommendation outlined a plan for creating economic growth as well as job creation specifically targeted at Americans struggling in the rural areas of the country. SBA Administrator Karen Mills announced, We will be doubling the capital going to rural businesses through the Small Business Investment Company program, with no cost to tax payers.(whitehouse.gov, 8/16/11) Included in this initiative is a provision which would make HHS loans accessible to benefit over 1,300 Critical Access Hospitals in staff recruitment. It will also provide much needed assistance to hospitals in rural areas with the purchase of new software, as well as provide access to hardware upgrades in order to implement up to date healthcare IT.

Leading travel nurse agency, American Traveler, announced in October a year-over-year increase of 56 percent in nurse job employment, a number that includes both staff RN positions and travel nurse jobs. The uptick, said Clinical Resource Manager, Deborah Bacurin, RN, is due to larger healthcare employers rebounding from recession and hiring travel nurses again, along with a sprouting up of ambulatory outpatient centers across all 50 states.

It looks like healthcare is back in business, Bacurin said. The demand for ambulatory nurse jobs has skyrocketed and almost half of all jobs created in September went to healthcare.

Bureau of Labor numbers confirm what Bacurin says. Hospital job growth in the first nine months of 2011 is four times what it was in all of 2010. Moreover, 42 percent of new jobs last month were healthcare jobs. Of those, ambulatory care jobs doubled in number.

Driving growth in ambulatory services is a number of factors, Bacurin said. First, technological advances in patient care have enabled a greater number of health problems to be treated by outpatient doctors and nurse practitioners. Add a boon in nursing care, as record numbers hit retirement age, and a clinical emphasis on preventive care, spawning thousands of jobs for nurse specialists and therapists. Healthcare jobs projected to increase most in coming years include registered nurses (RNs), nursing aides, licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses, reports Labor.

Its a really good time for nurses to consider a career in travel nursing, and for some to look beyond the hospital. New business models have pervaded healthcare. These include not only ambulatory care centers, but skilled nursing facilities, outpatient surgery clinics and various types of physician practices subject to a seasonal census, said recruitment VP, Mary Kay Hull.

Though nurse pay flattened during the recession, Hull said, shes starting to see wages bounce back to pre-recession levels and better. Her firm is experiencing a significant demand for nurse job specialties such as Operating Room and Labor and Delivery, and continues to fulfill requests for nurses and therapists well-versed in computerized patient care systems and modern therapies.

Depending on regional and state economies, physical therapists are now earning six figures in some markets, she said.

What does the future hold?

The outlook for healthcare jobs is positive according to Labor. Healthcare jobs continue to outpace employment sectors manufacturing and construction and are expected to number 344,000 by years end, a level of growth not seen in four years.

Hull said American Traveler recruitment figures fall in line with the boom in healthcare jobs growth. The company is on track to exceed last years placements in the first nine months of 2011 and continues to grow postings for niche nurse specialties and certifications.

The nurse jobs are out there, said Hull. They pay good and come with great benefits. On the other hand, healthcare employers are looking for the cream of the crop. Theyve raised performance standards for nurses and are keeping better track of where and how they spend labor dollars.
